Yu Yi, House of Bak Kut Teh

Yu Yi (友谊), which means 'friendship' in mandarin, was established 16 years ago in 1984. To-date, there are 3 outlets. First of which is located in Jalan Klang Lama, the second in Puchong and Jalan Imbi branch being the latest addition. How the owner came about having this name for his shop, is that he would usually gather with friends to catch up on each other and have a round of tasty Bak Kut Teh while sipping some good chinese tea. Sensing a great idea from his gathering of buddies, he decided to learn the art of Bak Kut Teh in depth.

So came the owner setting up the shop and started his first outlet in Jalan Klang Lama. The owner with a passion for good Bak Kut Teh, knew that he need to come up with something different to appeal to his customers, something delicious and unique. He came up with some of his own recipes and has been using them until today, which successfully draws returning customers to his shop everytime.

One of his signature dishes, hard to find in any other shops, is his Juicy Pork Ribs. He reason this is that usually other Bak Kut Teh shops only serve the normal pork ribs, which the meat is rough and tough to the tongue. How Juicy Pork Ribs is different is that they are ribs with belly meat, fragrant on the outside, juicy on the inside.

This definitely gives a lasting impression and a different experience altogether eating pork ribs!

So what if a customer does not fancy pork so much? The owner thought. No problem at all. He came up with his own recipe for steaming fish head as well and it is just as tasty. The presentation looks as good as it taste too.

Not a fish fan? His blend of Chicken in Yellow Wine which will guarantee to put your taste bud to the test!

No meal is complete without vegetables to store up your vitamin needs. There are an ample selection of greenery that you can order to go along with your meal.

Xenri - A japanese affair

Situated along Jalan Klang Lama  this is another hidden gem that is worth finding for. To spot its location, you first need to find Wisma Elken. Wisma Elken can be found beside Jalan Klang Lama, and this location is quite near to Citrus Park of OUG.

Xenri is famous for its various cooked japanese food, and of course their sashimi. It is best to visit this place on a Tuesday or Friday evening, as they import the sashimi directly from Japan during these 2 days, and it is the freshest!

Sometimes, there is something special that they serve which is not on the menu. So, be sure to ask the captain if there is any *special* offerings for the day.

Below is the sashimi platter. It is served nicely on a bowl of crushed ice. The sashimi taste better when colder. The sashimi that you are seeing here is hamachi/yellowtail, white tuna and salmon belly (inside the bamboo case). All 3 fishes have their unique fragrant and sweetness in their meat. a must try, and plus point is that they do not smell or taste fishy.

White tuna - sweet; yellowtail - good texture; salmon belly - fragrant!

Next, is the spider maki. Main ingredient is soft shell crab.

Spider maki - so tasty, it's not enough!!

Also not forgetting their dobin mushi. It is a pot of clear soup that you drink it like how you drink chinese tea.

Dobin mushi - Pleasantly refreshing!!

Cha soba is one of their specialty, and Xenri got it right, despite it being a very simple dish...

The raw pigeon egg goes with the sauce that you dip the soba in, and it is a wonderful addition.

Next up, sukiyaki with thin slices of premium beef!
Sukiyaki - this is quite a big serving. So make sure you have enough space in your stomach for this!

Another shot of the sashimi showing the thick slices of meat. Thick and juicy. Yum!!

All in all, nice ambience with nice food. Be sure to ask to sit inside as you will enjoy the decor while you enjoy the food. :)
